GOOD SUCCESS WAS WRITTEN TO:
- be a supplementary/companion reader to help students contextualize the concepts learned in core texts to the realities of the management/leadership vocational world.
- help assure the desired outcomes of upper-division undergraduate courses and MA, MBA, MPA and MHA graduate programs, as well.
- link to courses in Principles of Management, Fundamentals of Administration, Organizational Leadership, Human Resource Management, International Business Management, Strategy and Policy, among others.
- be used as a primary resource or as a support reader for senior seminars and capstone courses.
- enable student-led small groups, dialogue among students, insightful exchanges with instructors and as an enabling resource for project-based assignments.
- be an engaging and manageable read.
- be used en-toto or divided into topics according to instructional needs or learning/teaching formats.
- stimulate reflection and retention through poignancy and humor.
- effectively corroborate theory and bridge the gap between management theory and leadership practice.
- provide a framework for students to extend the knowledge learned in class, enhance their leadership/management acumen, and boost their vocational prospects.
- enable students to recognize and avoid the pitfalls of working for or becoming a bad leader.
Even the most able teaching professors cannot convey everything they wish to teach given time and resource constraints. GOOD SUCCESS helps professors fulfill the obligation to create the best possible learning opportunity.
GOOD SUCCESS reliably backfills knowledge and learning gaps for students when professors are restrained by time, other academic obligations, and new educational realities.
Absent the unique opportunity to work with great leaders one’s entire career, it is imperative for emerging leaders to learn from both the good and the bad.
Rick English, Chief Executive Officer ProCo

USE CASES:
- A professor with minimal TA, grad student or office support has students using onsite, online and hybrid means to learn. Class numbers are higher than normal, due to a decrease in sections. Professor assigns GOOD SUCCESS as a resource to help lead discussion among students. GOOD SUCCESS provides structure for students and time margins for professor.
- A professor engaged GOOD SUCCESS as a primary resource for TA lead discussions and interactions although TA had neither substantial prior teaching nor field experience. Professor did so with confidence that GOOD SUCCESS would bolster the success and impact of the TA while increasing the knowledge of students.
- Students use GOOD SUCCESS as a prime resource for individual writing assignments, to identify important research topics and to augment the content of primary text.
GOOD SUCCESS is essentially a comprehensive treatise on what constitutes the character of a good leader, gleaned from the failures of bad leaders. Dr. Self adroitly distills a lifetime of wisdom acquired during his remarkable tenure as a teacher and leader in academia and business.
Joshua Brittingham, J.D.
